Fort
Lauderdale, located in the center of South Florida's Gold Coast, midway
between Palm Beach and Miami, stretches from Deerfield Beach and Pompano
in the north to Hollywood and Hallandale Beach in the south.
Spread across 1,200 square miles, the region is home to 30 cities and
1.7 million residents. Fort Lauderdale proper, the largest city
and the county seat, has 150,000 residents.
Fort Lauderdales 165 miles of navigable waterways
contribute to the beauty of the city. 10% of the city surface is
water! Access to the ocean is plentiful for sailboats, cruisers,
ski boats, fishing boats and more. The smallest boats to the large
ocean liners use Fort Lauderdale as a home for their vessels.
But, boating, sailing, deep-sea fishing are just a
few of the leisure activities that Fort Lauderdale offers. The Las
Olas area, located near downtown Fort Lauderdale is quickly becoming one
of the most popular areas in the city, with its fabulous tropical feel
and proximity to shopping and restaurants. Thousands flock to the
area in the fall to see the Riverwalk Falls Art Show.
Also located in Fort Lauderdale is the $50 million
Broward Center of Performing Arts known for spectacular Broadway caliber
theatre and events. Residents often enjoy a relaxing stroll, just
outside of the Center along the Fort Lauderdale Riverfront. Another
fantastic attraction is the Fort Lauderdale Discovery Center, a science
museum for kids and the IMAX theatre.
Shopping in Fort Lauderdale is plentiful, from the
aforementioned Las Olas area to the Galleria Mall to the wide variety of
national and local stores and shops that line the road U.S. 1. Bargain
Hunters enjoy the 80 acre Swap Shop featuring more than 2023 vendors.
Fort Lauderdales population of over 150,000 enjoy
housing including single family homes, condominiums, townhomes and
apartments and easy access to beaches, highways and the Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Fort Lauderdale enjoys a sound and diverse
economy. The marine industry play important roles, including Port
Everglades, which has one of the deepest harbors south of Norfolk,
Virginia. The city plays hoes to over six million tourists each
year, who spend over $ three billion annually. Easy access to
Latin American countries and the Caribbean both by air and sea make our
area commercially strong and there are a multitude of readily available
sites for commercial and industrial type businesses.
Visitors to Fort Lauderdale and long-time residents alike are
periodically seized
with the urge to get into their automobiles and go for a drive to see
the ocean. The undisputable place to do this is the 5-mile stretch of
beach bordering the east side of Highway A1A from the 17th Street
Causeway to just north of Sunrise Boulevard. This is Fort Lauderdale
Beach, once known as the Fort Lauderdale strip.
In the Greater Fort Lauderdale area,
one pays the six percent sales tax on purchases and restaurant meals
that is typical of most U.S. cities. This tax does not apply, however,
to groceries or medicines. An additional three percent tax is paid on
tourist accommodations.
The Fort Lauderdale weather is the
envy of the nation. The average temperature throughout the year is
between 71 degrees Fahrenheit and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter
temperatures are usually in the mid-70s, though an occasional cooler
spell does come along. The visibility condition to be expected
is--sunny.
